Amtrak is rebuilding its Southampton Street yard in Boston, the base for Acela, Northeast Regional and Downeaster trains, around a new Maintenance and Inspection building: an 860-foot, two-track shed of more than 60,000 square feet with inspection pits and drop tables, delivered design-build by the SPS New England and Railroad Construction Company joint venture. Atlantic Bridge & Engineering holds the structural steel contract for the facility, about 1,500 tons in all. The M&I building accounts for roughly 1,260 tons of columns, girders, beams, braced frames and joists under 83,000 square feet of composite floor and roof deck.
Two ABE crews erect it from the building's expansion joint outward, north and south, with two telescopic crawler cranes travelling the pit line, and every moment connection is field-welded. Three fuel canopies add about 230 tons of hot-dip galvanized steel and 20,000 square feet of roof deck, phased around building shutdowns. Galvanized fuel-piping supports, including two shop-assembled trusses, and the mezzanine, joist and deck packages for three ancillary buildings complete the steel scope, and ABE also took on the project's precast. All of it goes up inside an operating electrified rail yard, sequenced with catenary outages and live Amtrak and MBTA train movements. Ground was broken in November 2025; the facility opens in phases through 2029.
