The Manhattan Bridge has carried traffic and four subway tracks over the East River since 1909, and the New York City Department of Transportation has rehabilitated it contract by contract since the 1980s. For Skanska Koch's structural and component rehabilitation, Atlantic Bridge & Engineering was the furnish-only fabricator of the fracture-critical repair steel, working under our AISC fracture-critical qualification from the contractor's CNC files. Every piece was ASTM A709 Grade 50W weathering steel with Zone 2 fracture-critical toughness and the specified prime coat: floorbeam connection repairs at the approach spans, vertical gusset plates at the lower truss chords at 58 main-span and more than 40 approach-span and pier locations, stringer diaphragm connection repairs above the subway tracks, and stringer retrofits, about 140 tons in all, quoted in April 2018 and delivered from ABE's New Hampshire shops between 2019 and 2022. The work began with a pair of 60-by-20-foot movable steel platforms fabricated so the contractor's crews could reach the work under the deck.
