MIT's East Campus undergraduate residence, Buildings 62 and 64, is a pair of five-story brick dormitories from 1924. Consigli Construction led a two-year renewal that added elevators, widened corridors, opened up new lounges and kitchens, and brought the buildings up to current life-safety and accessibility standards. Atlantic Bridge & Engineering furnished and erected the structural steel that made that possible: about 330 tons in total, most of it new steel brace frames to stiffen the existing structures, plus embed plates, enabling steel, floor framing at every level and the roof, framing for the rooftop head houses and electrical rooms, and support steel for mechanical and electrical equipment.
Working inside standing buildings on a tight urban campus meant steel arrived in sequence with demolition, was set with limited crane access, and was coordinated piece by piece with the fireproofing and finishes that followed. The buildings reopened to students in 2025 and the project earned LEED Gold certification.
